The French libretto was written by Jules Barbier, based on three short stories by E. Hoffmann, who is the protagonist of the story. It was Offenbach's final work he died in October 1880, four months before the premiere. Offenbach saw a play, Les contes fantastiques d'Hoffmann, written by Barbier and Michel Carré and produced at the Odéon Theatre in Paris in 1851. Although it was more-or-less all ready, the promoters brought in composer Ernest Guiraud, who had made a minor name for himself just a few years earlier with his reworkings of the recitative sections of Bizets Carmen. Jacques Offenbach 20 June 1819 - 5 October 1880, composer and cellist, was one of the originators of the operetta form, a precursor of the modern musical comedy. He was one of the most influential composers of popular music in Europe in the 19th century, and many of his works remain in the repertory. Offenbach was born in Cologne, Germany and was the son of Isaac Juda Eberst, a cantor, bookbinder, music teacher and composer. Imported ed. LP 12 album, 33 rpm, Box Set. Verified Purchase. Although there are several recordings of Les Contes d'Hoffmann in the catalogue, and I don't claim to have heard even a representative sample, I doubt few of them surpass this wonderful, fresh-sounding, superbly sung, conducted and performed version. Part of its success is due to how compellingly and clearly it lays out the story in terms of atmosphere and dramatic momentum. Jacques Offenbach: The Tales of Hoffmann, 1989. Urban Malmberg
