Released July 7, 1993. Up the Downstair Summary: After a terrible debut, Porcupine Tree redeem themselves with an extremely trippy psychedelic album filled with a memorable atmosphere and superb instrumental tracks. At this point in the band's career, Porcupine Tree was still a one man band with the occasional help from other musicians. The problem with being a one man band is that it could easily show on albums like On the Sunday of Life because of its poor production and overall lack of a cohesive feel. However, on Up the Downstair no one would ever realize that it was mostly Steve Wilson perfor. Up the Downstair feels noticeably different in tone from On the Sunday of Life - the humor is nearly invisible, if present at all, and the focus is more explicitly up to date in keeping with Steven Wilson's long-stated belief that progressive music means incorporating the now instead of rehashing what progressive was. His singing is now more accomplished in turn - it sounds like he might have been taking a lesson or two from his No-Man partner Tim Bowness, but he has his own dreamy approach.
