Short intro

Dinah Washington died at thirty-nine, but packed so much life and incident into every moment its a wonder that Nadine Cohodas could sort it out the marital adventures alone might have daunted a less avid biographer. Nor does she slight her music. Dinah could make every kind of song vital and personal, no matter the contextjazz, blues, swing, pop, r&b, or r&r. Cohodas captures the Queen in all her obstinate spitfire glory. Gary Giddins, author of Weather Bird and Bing Crosby: A Pocketful of Dreams. She walked to the microphone with a slow, confident gait, sizing up this nights audience as they took her in from their seats. She was just over five feet but seemed much taller. Queen of the Blues,'' Sasha Dalton attempts to celebrate Dinah Washington with a one-woman show about her music and her brief, meteoric career. However, the result is essentially a cabaret recapitulation on stage. The musical, which opened last night at the Westside Arts Center, was presented in a shorter version last year at the Ballroom, and a club would seem to be a more natural milieu. Miss Washington made her reputation as a singer of rhythm, blues and pop songs, although she never ascended to the heights of a Bessie Smith or a Sarah Vaughan. Her death, at the age of 39, was sud. Since her youth Franklin had admired Dinah Washington, and it's a safe bet that the level of emotional commitment Washington brought to her work was a major influence on the blossoming style of Aretha, not to mention Washington's effortless sense of swing. Shortly before she died, Washington took appreciate notice of her acolyte as well. So Aretha's tribute to Washington is as logical as it is satisfying. Much of what is here falls to the R&B side, revealing a somewhat rougher style that will be revelatory to listeners only familiar with her later more smoothed-out pop material. This lady could sing anything in any style and make it her own just listen to how she claims Hank Williams' Cold, Cold Heart here. This box is an absolute treasure trove from one of the best singers of the 20th century
